Service Spotlight:
Value of Vision Screening

Are you taking your employees’ vision for granted? Mandatory vision screening is generally only required once in your lifetime: when applying for a driver’s license. That may have been 15, 20 or even 30 years ago and your employee’s vision may have drastically changed in the meantime. It’s quite possible they may now require corrective lenses, or worse yet, they may now have an underlying medical condition that can be a root cause for errors.

Occupational vision screening can prevent individuals from being placed in jobs where poor vision can affect their performance. For instance, consider a Crane Operator with no depth perception or hindered peripheral vision–an accident could be disastrous.  To an employer, the costs of sick pay, lost working time, temporary labourers, and the potential loss of a product or contract could add up to a very large sum.

Employers should consider providing vision screening for anyone who operates a company vehicle or Powered Industrial Vehicle during the course of their work day. Vision screening will play a key role in delivering a safe, responsible and prosperous working environment.

Apex Occupational Health and Wellness offers Vision Screenings that can be delivered either onsite at your workplace for your employees’ convenience or can be scheduled in by appointment at our office located on River Rd in Kitchener, ON.

Vision screening includes:

  • Medical History Questionnaire
  • Visual Acuity (Near and Far): Measures the eye’s ability to see details at near and far distances.
  • Depth Perception: Measures the eye’s ability to perceive the world in three dimensions (3D) and the distance of an object.
  • Visual Field (Peripheral): Checks for gaps in your side (peripheral) vision. Your complete visual field (up to 170°) is the entire area seen when your gaze is fixed in one direction.  (Individual eye 55° 70° 85°)
  • Colour deficiency: Checks your ability to distinguish colors. Color vision tests are also used to screen applicants for jobs in fields where color perception is essential, such as law enforcement, the military, or electronics.

They say that the eyes are the window to an individual’s health. Be proactive, not reactive! The cost of vision screening is nominal and could save an employer money in the long run. When a vision test is required anywhere in Ontario, Apex has experienced professionals to conduct, monitor and document a full Vision Screening Program. Let Apex show you how vision screening can add value to your company and to your employees’ health and safety.
