Celebrating Nursing in Canada and Around the World: International Nursing Day – May 12th

May 7th to 13th is National Nursing Week and Saturday, May 12th is International Nursing Day. Nurses are a very important part of Apex and we are so appreciative of everything that they do for us and our clients!

The theme this year for National Nursing Week is #YesThisIsNursing. It was submitted by Alliah Over, an RN, MN from Newmarket, Ontario. The inspiration for her submission stems from the ever-evolving role of a nurse, keeping in mind the traditional role and also understanding the new dynamics that nurses face every day.

There are so many different types of nursing, which is why the theme this year of Yes This Is Nursing is very relevant! At Apex, we employee Occupational Health Nurses.

What does an Occupational Health Nurse do?

Best Master of Science in Nursing Degrees describes Occupational Health Nurses as “specialists who practice in industrial and community settings to help improve the health and safety of workers and other community groups. The role of an OHN can be extremely diverse and specific responsibilities will depend upon where an OHN is employed.”

Responsibilities can include:

  • Observation of workers doing their job tasks to assess health statuses
  • Development of innovative health and safety programs
  • Management of work-related diseases
  • Disaster and emergency planning
  • Environmental health planning
  • Emergency care to injured employees who are on-the-clock
  • Working with executives to lower costs of disability claims or other related costs
