New Year’s Resolutions 2018:
8 Ways to Stay Active at Work

It’s that time again! The beginning of a new year and an opportunity to get a fresh start on making positive changes. Some of us find ourselves starting off the year with high expectations of ourselves, aiming to achieve everything from career goals to health and fitness goals. Why not combine the two and stay active at work!

As adults, we find ourselves spending most of our waking hours at work. In view of this, why not make the most of our time at the office and plan ways to make it as healthy and productive as we can. Not everyone has the time to run to the gym on their lunch break, but the intention and willingness is still there. Take a look below at the list of eight easy ways to help you stay active at work. Try one or try them all! Staying active at work can be accomplished in a variety of ways, you just need to find the ones that suit you.

1. Host standing or walking meetings.

In today’s typical office setting, employees are often sitting for a majority of their workday. Try suggesting a standing or walking meeting to get your team up and out of their seats. Movement may help to promote concentration and creative thought.

2. Wear comfortable shoes.

Promote activity at work by wearing the right footwear. Heels may be stylish but they aren’t very practical when you’re working towards incorporating activity into your workday. If style is important to you, bring your runners with you and keep them at your desk for that lunch time walk or afternoon stroll.

3. Invest in a pedometer.

Tracking your steps has never been easier. With the large number of fitness tracking options on the market, it’s easy to stay on top of your activity level and have information at your fingertips.

4. Stretch every 30 minutes.

You don’t have to go to the gym to be active. Many stretches can be done at your desk or in your office. Have a goal of getting up and out of your seat every 30 minutes of computer work. Set a reminder on your phone or online calendar to help you stay accountable to your goal.

5. Try alternate commuting options.

If you live close to work, try a new commuting option by riding your bike to work or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try walking to work! Being outdoors will be beneficial to prepare you for the day ahead, and may help you clear your mind at the end of each day.

6. Park your car farther away.

You don’t have to snag the closest spot to the door. Try parking in the back and taking a brisk walk to the door. Every little bit of physical activity counts!

7. Get active at lunch.

Take a walk after your lunch to promote digestion and prepare yourself for the afternoon ahead. Grab a friend and make it a habit!

8. Take the stairs.

If you don’t have many flights to get to your office, take the active route and use the stairs. You may even beat the elevator lines!
